Once there was a girl
She was 19 and utterly naive and had a lot of hope for the future. One day, she decided to throw caution to the wind and did what everyone warned her not to do. She took a plane to Norway. There she was greeted by someone whom she thought would be her prince charming.
She had left Singapore—the heat, the family, the only life I knew—for a man. I told myself it was love. I told myself I was brave. What I did not tell myself was that I was running away from what I perceived as a miserable life.
That was 30 years ago.
In those three decades, I have been married twice. Divorced twice. I have loved wolves in sheep’s clothing. I have built a life in a country that never quite felt like home, and I still have some hope that it will all be okay at the end of it.
I have also been broken open—by bureaucracy, by my own patterns, and by the long, quiet winters that forced me to sit with myself.
Now, I am not running anymore. I have faced and fought the demons that torment me and now I am ready to make my journey home,
